Today I left my house at 8:30 am and drove for 2 hours in the pouring rain with my sister. We were going to pick up a sofa I found on craigs list. We drove home again in the pouring rain with the sofa strapped to the top of the car. The whole time I felt a bit crazy—like I wasn’t using good judgment. I mean it was a loooong drive, and I really had no idea how or even if we would be able to transport it back to my house. But sometimes risks pay off. I actually really love it. The wood is beautiful. It would be awesome to have it reupholstered, but maybe someday… It is a nice enough piece that it would be worth it.
So my sister thought I was crazy for even wanting this sofa in the first place. (It’s not really her style.) And I’m sure all of my friends think I’m crazy because every time they come over here, the living room looks different. But I just haven’t been able to get it right yet. It is a difficult room to arrange furniture in. After much careful thought and consideration today, and lots more rearranging, we may have come up with a good solution. Maybe it will stay how it is for a while. Or maybe I just have living room ADD.
I am thinking I should post more pictures of the room tomorrow and ask for suggestions…
I am constantly moving things around in our house. I move furniture from room to room, change the rugs around, recover pillows, and that sort of thing. This time I just meant to move the sofa to vacuum under it, and it led to a domino effect. Junji walked in and said the sofa looked good where I moved it to, but then everything else had to be moved too. I actually really like the change, but I would love some second opinions. I have read Apartment Therapy: The Eight Step Home-Cure (which I highly recommend), and I am aware of the “bowling alley effect” that you get when you have all of the furniture pushed up against the walls, but on the other hand, when you have a toddler, it is kind of nice to have a big open space in the middle of the room. We also moved the TV out of the room all together. We now have no TV on the first floor of our house, and it has totally changed the way we spend our days. Not that we watched that much TV before (we don’t even have cable), but I used to like to have it on in the background when I was doing chores around the house. Now we just listen to pandora instead. It’s nice. Plus we don’t have to worry about arranging our furniture around the TV.
Also, you might notice that the Sofa is now blue. It seems to change color quite frequently. We bought it from IKEA with a white cover, and then I begged Junji to let us buy a new green cover. Our cat, Michael, just completely tore that up, so I dyed the original white cover blue. We have to live with it like that for a while. Can’t spend more money on another cover that Michael will just destroy again.
Anyway, what do you think?
